I then went to radioshack and bought some small zip ties and zip tied the linkage in place. On inspection, I noticed the cruise control linkage and slid off. As I have some automotive mechanic experience, I figured something was wrong with the throttle linkage or something was stuck in the throttle plate. I pulled into a parking lot and coasted in neutral, parked and shut off the engine. Then it became apparent that the car was accelerating independently of my input through the gas. After putting it into neutral I noticed the car would not goes less than 2000 rpm on the tachometer. It was subtle at first but then became more pronounced so I started shifting the car into neutral to see if it was the engine or something else. I was on vacation driving up the coast of California and I noticed it was becoming increasingly difficult to brake my vehicle and my tachometer would not predictably fall as I let off the gas. Ford would give me an answer to that question. I wanted Ford to tell me why it takes so long to get the speedometer in. Ford said they would not cover the speedometer. The car when I bought it has only 29,500 miles on it. Just received a call from Ford to say the speedometer would be shipped August 6, 2008. Ford said they would call me on July 22 to let me know when the speedometer would be shipped. Ford said they would expedite the speedometer for me. I call Ford directly and had Ford look into this. The dealer call the Ford dealer and was told that the speedometer needs to be replaced. When the speed sensor came in and was replaced in the car the speedometer still was not working correctly. Ordered 1 from a Ford dealer which took a week to come in. They tested the car and said the speed sensor was bad. I took the car back to the dealer, which is not a Ford dealer. It was reading 50 mph but I was actually going on 40 mph. A couple of days later I noticed that the speedometer was not working correctly. I did notice a similar thing happen to my car about a year and a half ago, but at that time the only thing that happened was the speedometer dropped from about 55 mph to 0 a few times within 5-10 seconds but it did not try to shift to a lower gear like this time when the speedometer and rpm indicators quit on me while in operation. This activity did not occur at all while I was driving on the hwy (41 north) about 10 minutes prior to driving at city speed of 30-35 mph after exiting for about 2 miles to my final location which did not require any stop and go driving except when I got off the hwy and slowed to 30-35 mph onto prospect Ave in appleton, WI. Since I was less than a mile from my destination I made it safely to my location and haven't drove it since. It did this twice within 90 seconds of each time. Was driving my 1999 Ford Taurus at a speed of 30-35 mph after driving at 70-75 mph steady for about an hour on the hwy and then without any notice while driving, the speedometer dropped from 30-35mph to 0-5 mph and stayed at that for about 3-5 seconds and my car tried to downshift and deexcelerate and also drop the transmission into a lower gear all on its own without any attempts to brake or slow down from my current speed of 30-35 mph.
